এর আগে পাঁচবার বিশ্বচ্যাম্পিয়নের খাতায় নাম উঠেছে শুধু তাই নয় একাধিক বার এশিয়া চ্যাম্পিয়নও হয়েছেন মেরিকম । ২০১২-এর লন্ডনে অলিম্পিকে ব্রোঞ্জ জিতেছিলেন তিনি।
একই দিনে কুস্তিতে জোড়া সোনা এল ভারতের। আফ্রিকান কুস্তিগীরকে হারিয়ে সোনা জিতলেন সুশীল। ৭৪ কেজি বিভাগে ফ্রি স্টাইলে দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকার জোহানস বোথাকে হারিয়ে কমনওয়েলথ গেমসে সোনা জয়ে হ্যাটট্রিক করলেন তিনি। অন্যদিকে কুস্তিতে আরও একটি সোনা নিয়ে এলেন রাহুল আওরে। ৫৭ কেজি বিভাগে কানাডার প্রতিপক্ষকে ১৫-৭ হারিয়ে সোনা পান রাহুল। তাসলিকায় রয়েছেন সঞ্জীব রাজপুত এবং গৌরব সোলাঙ্কি। সব মিলিয়ে এখনও পর্যন্ত ১৮টি সোনা সহ ৪৩ টি পদক রয়েছে ভারতের ঝুলিতে।
